How has your mother inspired you?

Growing up, I had the opportunity of witnessing an incredibly hard working, inspiring, knowledgeable, and trailblazer of a woman as a mother and as a business leader. She created a family, two very successful business, and was always involved in great causes. She exudes strength, capability, empowerment, and ultimately is a woman on fire! I admire everything about her commitment to others, and the balance of work and family life she has instilled into her life. She is my person, my mentor, and my best friend!

My name is:

Hope Achieng

My Mother’s name is:

The late Birungi Margaret

My Mother Matters because…

She was a strong, kind and loving person. Qualities that she taught my sisters to cultivate which they used to raise me to be the woman I am today.

How has your mother inspired you?

I lost my mother when I was 1 years old and all I know about her is based on stories my siblings and [my mother’s] her siblings share with me and also cassette recordings my dad made of her singing to me. She was a very hardworking woman traveling on lorries selling clothes and small scale farming so as to contribute financially to the family and raising us all with the right morals and proper skills of life. She inspires me to be hardworking, resilient, and kind like she was. My grandmother tears when she sees me because she says I took over her late daughter right from physical character attributes and I am humbled to carry on her reputation.

My Mother’s name is:

Mary Elizabeth MacArthur Wendell

My Mother Matters because…

She is deeply committed to providing opportunity, strength, and love to our family and her community. All with a great sense of humor!

How has your mother inspired you?

How can I summarize how inspiring my mom is? My mom is an amazing combination of strength, humor, smarts, talent, and commitment. We named our daughter after her - Mary Elizabeth (nickname “Emmie”) which I hope she understands is the biggest compliment we can giver her! My mom has been modeling the importance of social impact since I was young with her work in community service, our local church, and by serving on numerous boards, including taking on Board Chair of more than one. She has a very quick wit that she uses to connect with everyone she meets and to remind us to not take ourselves too seriously. I have learned so much about how to be as a person, a woman, and now, a mother. I hope one day my daughter can admire me the way I admire my mom. Love you, Mom!

Rebecca Yount

My Mother’s name is:

Carri

My Mother Matters because…

She taught me the importance of being a global citizen

How has your mother inspired you?

My mom and I live 700+ miles apart and have for over a decade. While we talk every day, this means we don’t see each other but a handful of times a year. Last year, while visiting her for her birthday, without planning it, talking about it, or even knowing it, we showed up for breakfast in matching clothes! Clothing, conversation, or compassion, there is just something special about the relationship between a mother and a daughter. I am so thankful for mine. I love you to the moon and back, Mom!
